kNOw Abuse in Auroville

In Auroville, we are all aware of general incidents and movements related to different kinds of Abuse, and we seldom bring it to our public discourse. Aware’s “kNOw Abuse in Auroville” initiative is meant to proactively look at the perils amidst us and discuss about safeguarding ourselves against them. It is important to note that like any other community, Auroville is not immune to instances of abuse or violence. Auroville has various policies and procedures in place to address and prevent abuse, and there are a few dedicated individuals within the community who work towards promoting awareness and preventing abuse.

It is essential to prioritize the safety and well-being of all individuals within the community, and anyone who experiences or witnesses abuse should report it to the appropriate authorities or organizations. It is also important to have open and honest communication about issues related to abuse and to work towards creating a safe and supportive environment for everyone in the community.

We need to ‘know’ about abuse, to even take steps towards ‘no’ abuse in Auroville. 

Verbal Abuse

Verbal abuse can have a profound impact on an individual’s mental and emotional well-being. It can take many forms, including insults, belittling, yelling, and threatening language. In Auroville, it is important to create a culture of respect and kindness towards all individuals, regardless of their background or beliefs. By being mindful of our words and actions, we can prevent verbal abuse and create a safe and supportive environment for everyone in the community.

Power/positions Abuse

Abuse of power and positions is a form of exploitation that can occur in any community, including Auroville. Those in positions of authority, whether formal or informal, may use their power to control or manipulate others, creating an unsafe and unequal environment. It is essential to recognize and address this type of abuse to ensure that everyone in the community is treated with dignity and respect. Education and awareness-raising efforts can help prevent this type of abuse and promote a culture of equality and empowerment.

Influence / Connections Abuse

Influence and connections can sometimes be misused as a means of gaining undue advantages and privileges, leading to abuse of power. In a community like Auroville, where individuals come from diverse backgrounds, it is important to acknowledge the potential for such abuse and work towards preventing it. This can be done by promoting transparency and accountability, and by creating a culture of mutual respect and equality, where everyone is treated fairly and justly, regardless of their social status or connections.

Resources Abuse

Resources abuse can take many forms, such as hoarding or misusing resources, denying others access to resources, or exploiting resources for personal gain. Masters’ Abuse - S/He said

Masters’ abuse refers to the misuse of the teachings of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother to justify or manipulate others. This can include using their words to gain power or control over others, or to silence those who may have differing opinions. It is important to remember that the teachings of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother are meant to inspire and guide individuals towards their own inner development, and should not be used as a means of oppression or coercion.

Indian Law - Abuse

ACT88 Abuse

Paedophile's Abuse

Auroville has policies and procedures in place to prevent abuse of tourists, and anyone who witnesses or experiences abuse should report it immediately. It is important to create a safe and welcoming environment for all visitors to Auroville.
