Living the Vision Through Structure
The City Areas translate Auroville’s ideals into lived form. They organise the city not by convenience or commerce, but by function, balance, and collective purpose. Conceived as four interdependent zones—International, Industrial, Cultural, and Residential—these areas are designed to support work, creativity, exchange, and daily life without fragmenting the whole.
Each zone holds a distinct role, yet none stands alone. Together, they form a living ecology where economic activity does not overpower culture, housing does not isolate individuals, and global engagement does not dilute local coherence. The City Areas exist to protect this balance—ensuring that growth remains aligned with intention.
At a time when pressure to “develop” often means to sprawl or compromise, preparing the City Areas matters deeply. It is here that Auroville must demonstrate how form can serve consciousness, and how a city can grow without losing its soul.
International Zone
The International Zone of which Administrative Zone is also part of, holds Auroville’s outward-facing responsibilities and its relationship with the wider world. It is here that governance, coordination, and international dialogue find spatial form. The Auroville International Information Centre serves as a point of orientation and connection, while the International Zone and its pavilions—African, Asian, European, American, and Oceania—are envisioned as spaces for exchange rather than display. This zone exists to host conversations on culture, cooperation, and shared futures, grounded in the idea of universal human unity. Preparing this area means creating environments where administration remains transparent and global engagement stays aligned with Auroville’s founding aspiration, without becoming detached from lived collective life.
Industrial Zone
The Industrial Zone supports Auroville’s material self-reliance through production, skills, and innovation rooted in collective values. Organised around the six Lines of Forces, it is designed to host enterprises, workshops, and services that contribute to the city’s economic base without replicating extractive models. The Vocational Training Centre plays a key role in skill development, linking learning directly to work and livelihood. A B2B and market hub enables exchange, collaboration, and responsible trade. Preparing this zone is about aligning economic activity with purpose—ensuring that work sustains the city without consuming it, and that livelihoods strengthen autonomy, competence, and dignity rather than dependency.
Cultural Zone
The Cultural Zone is dedicated to the expression and cultivation of the human spirit through art, knowledge, and physical culture. Pranashakti holds spaces for art, music, poetry, and creative exploration, while Jnanashakti supports libraries, learning environments, and knowledge-sharing. Dehashakti focuses on sports, movement, and the care of the body as an instrument of consciousness. Together, these fields recognise culture not as entertainment, but as an essential dimension of human development. Preparing the Cultural Zone involves creating accessible, open spaces where expression is rooted in sincerity rather than performance, and where creativity, learning, and physical wellbeing support an integral approach to individual and collective growth.
Residential Zone
The Residential Zone is where Auroville’s ideals are tested daily, in the ordinary rhythms of living. Organised along eleven Lines of Force, it aims to balance density with breathing space, privacy with community. Shared infrastructures—such as Lunar and Star community kitchens, cycle kiosks, libraries of things, and collective laundrettes—reduce duplication and encourage participation over ownership. This zone is not about housing as real estate, but habitation as a conscious choice. Preparing the Residential Zone means designing for proximity, simplicity, and mutual care, so that everyday life supports collective values naturally, without constant negotiation or strain, and allows residents to live lightly and responsibly.
The City Areas are where inner aspiration meets outer organisation. They ensure that Auroville’s ideals are not confined to texts or symbols, but expressed through how people live, work, create, and relate. When these zones function in harmony, the city itself becomes a practice of human unity—structured, yet free; diverse, yet coherent.
Prepare the City the Earth needs, with Aware. Reflect on how the City takes form—its spaces, systems, and intentions—so that Auroville can consciously shape its future and share these learnings with others engaged in collective progress.
